It's Okay to Not Be Okay: How to Talk to Your GP About Mental Health
Talking about your mental health can feel difficult, but it’s one of the most courageous and important steps you can take. Your General Practitioner is often the best person to speak with first. They are a confidential, non-judgmental starting point for getting the support you need.
At Parkmore Medical Centre, our doctors are here to listen and help you navigate the path to feeling better. A key tool we can use is called a Mental Health Care Plan.
What is a Mental Health Care Plan?
A Mental Health Care Plan is a plan you create with your doctor to support your mental wellbeing. It’s for anyone who is going through a difficult time or experiencing a mental health condition like anxiety or depression.
The plan involves your doctor assessing your situation, working with you to set goals, and outlining a course for treatment.
The Main Benefit: Access to Rebates for Psychology
One of the most important features of a Mental Health Care Plan is that it allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions with a registered psychologist, occupational therapist, or social worker per calendar year.
This significantly reduces the out-of-pocket cost, making professional psychological support much more accessible for our Keysborough community.
How to Start the Conversation with Your Doctor
- Book a Longer Appointment: When you call or book online, ask for a longer consultation. This ensures you have plenty of time to talk without feeling rushed. You can simply say, “I’d like to book a longer appointment to discuss a personal health matter” or “I’d like to talk about a Mental Health Care Plan.”
- It’s Okay to Be Nervous: We understand this can be a tough conversation. You don’t need to have all the answers. You can start by saying something as simple as, “I haven’t been feeling like myself lately,” or “I’ve been feeling very anxious/down.”
- Be Honest: The more open you are about your feelings and symptoms, the better your doctor can help you. They might ask you to fill out a short questionnaire to better understand what you’re experiencing.
Your Mental Health is Health
At Parkmore Medical Centre, we treat your mental health with the same importance as your physical health. Taking the first step is brave, and we are here to support you through the entire process.
