What is Spirometry?
Spirometry is the most common and effective pulmonary function test (PFT). It measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, as well as how quickly and forcefully you can empty your lungs.
By measuring parameters such as Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), your GP can:
Accurately diagnose Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Chronic Bronchitis
Distinguish between obstructive and restrictive airway patterns
Assess unexplained shortness of breath, chronic cough, or persistent wheezing
Evaluate occupational lung exposures or pre-employment fitness
Measure lung response before and after using a bronchodilator (such as Ventolin) to check for reversibility

Calibrated Digital Spirometry: Testing is conducted using calibrated, high-precision equipment adhering strictly to TSANZ (Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand) and ATS/ERS guidelines.
Respiratory Physician Review: Traces and flow-volume loops are reviewed and reported by accredited respiratory and sleep physicians.
Integrated Care: Results are sent straight to your Parkmore GP, allowing immediate implementation or adjustment of your respiratory management plan.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
To ensure results are clinically valid, please follow these preparation guidelines prior to your test:

| 2 Hours Prior | Avoid eating a heavy meal. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict chest expansion. |
| Inhaler Management | Do not stop taking essential medications unless instructed. If your GP has requested an asthma diagnostic test, they may ask you to stop preventer/inhaled steroid device for 2 weeks before the test. Confirm specific withholding times with reception when booking. |
What to Expect During the Test
Initial Measurements: Our clinician records your height, weight, age, and biological sex, which determine your baseline predicted lung values.
Breathing Manoeuvres: You will sit upright, place a sterile single-use filter in your mouth, and wear a soft nose clip to prevent nasal airflow.
The Effort: You will be coached to take a full, deep breath in, then blow out as hard, fast, and completely as you can until your lungs are completely empty (typically 6 seconds).
Repetitions: The manoeuvre is repeated at least three times to ensure consistent, repeatable readings.
Bronchodilator (If Indicated): You may be given a dose of a bronchodilator puff, followed by a 10–15 minute wait before repeating the test to see if your airflow improves.
The entire consultation takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral for spirometry?
Yes. Spirometry at Parkmore Medical Centre requires a referral from one of our general practitioners to ensure clinical indication and eligibility for Medicare rebates.
Is the test covered by Medicare?
When clinically indicated and requested by a GP, diagnostic spirometry (including pre- and post-bronchodilator assessment) attracts a Medicare rebate under MBS item numbers. Please check with reception regarding current billing policies.
Is spirometry safe?
Spirometry is a routine, non-invasive test. Because it requires forceful exhalation, it temporarily increases pressure in your chest, abdomen, and eyes. Please inform your GP if you have had recent eye surgery, a heart attack, an aneurysm, or recent thoracic/abdominal surgery.
