Iron Infusion

Iron IV Infusion in Keysborough

At Parkmore Medical Centre, we are delighted to extend our services to include intravenous iron infusions for individuals experiencing iron deficiency who may not tolerate or respond well to oral iron replacement. Our iron infusion GP clinic provides effective treatments to help quickly restore iron levels and promote overall wellbeing.

What is an Iron IV Infusion?

An iron IV infusion is a treatment that delivers iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. This method allows for fast absorption of iron, bypassing the digestive system entirely. It is often recommended for individuals who are unable to tolerate oral iron supplements due to gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea or constipation.

Iron infusions are typically recommended for moderate to severe iron deficiency, when oral supplementation has proven ineffective. Common scenarios where an iron IV infusion may be necessary include chronic blood loss, malabsorption conditions, and in cases where rapid restoration of iron levels is needed, such as during pregnancy or post-surgery. The procedure is safe, well-tolerated and usually results in noticeable improvements in energy levels and overall health within several weeks.

The Importance of Maintaining Adequate Iron Levels

Iron is a vital element required for the production of healthy red blood cells, crucial for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Without adequate iron, the body cannot produce enough haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, leading to symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia. Maintaining optimal iron levels is essential for sustaining energy, supporting cognitive function and ensuring proper muscle activity.

Symptoms of iron deficiency may include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, brittle nails, pallor, shortness of breath and frequent headaches. Left untreated, iron deficiency may lead to more severe health complications, including heart problems and developmental delays in children. Addressing iron deficiency early is important for preventing long-term issues and improving overall quality of life.

What Can Cause Iron Deficiency?

Iron deficiency can be linked to various factors such as a vegetarian diet, heavy menstrual periods, intestinal blood loss, pregnancy and certain chronic diseases.

What to Expect When Getting an Iron IV Infusion

To initiate the process, an initial consultation with one of our experienced General Practitioners is necessary to assess your suitability for an iron infusion. Please schedule an appointment for this consultation at our iron infusion clinic. This will give us the opportunity to review your medical history and order blood tests if necessary to confirm the diagnosis of iron deficiency.

Upon determination of suitability, a subsequent appointment will be arranged for your iron IV infusion in Keysborough. On the day of your infusion, we advise you to stay hydrated, maintain your regular diet and wear a comfortable t-shirt to facilitate access to both arms. It is essential for patients to obtain the iron vial from a pharmacy prior to their appointment and bring it along.

During the infusion, a healthcare professional will insert an IV cannula into a vein in your arm. The iron solution will then be administered slowly over a period of 15 to 30 minutes. You may feel a slight prick when the cannula is inserted, but the procedure is generally painless. Throughout the infusion, you will be monitored for any adverse reactions.

After the iron IV infusion is complete, the cannula will be removed, and you will be asked to remain in the clinic for a short observation period to ensure there are no immediate reactions. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after the appointment.

Please allocate approximately 45 minutes for the appointment, including preparation and post-infusion observation time.

What are the risks or side effects of an IV iron infusion?

If you have any signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, mouth or throat, difficulty breathing or chest pain, tell your nurse or doctor immediately.

Side effects and severe reactions are very rare. The most common side effects are:

Some of these side effects can start 1 to 2 days after the infusion, but normally settle down by themselves over a few days.

Fewer than 1 out of 100 people experience a severe allergic reaction.

Change in skin colour near the IV site is also a very rare side effect. This happens when the infusion leaks into the surrounding soft tissue.

Your nurse will keep a close watch during your infusion to minimise your risk of side effects. If they are concerned that you are having a reaction to the infusion, they may stop or slow your infusion.
