Why Choose Ear Microsuction Over Traditional Ear Syringing?
For years, water irrigation (ear syringing) was the standard way to clear blocked ears. However, flushing water into the ear canal can be messy, uncomfortable, and carries risks of ear infections, dizziness, or eardrum trauma—especially if you have a history of ear issues.
Ear microsuction is the modern gold standard in aural care:
100% Dry & Water-Free: Eliminates moisture build-up, dramatically reducing the risk of post-procedure ear infections (swimmer’s ear).
Direct Microscopic Vision: Performed using specialised magnification and bright LED illumination, allowing the clinician to see deep inside your ear canal and around your eardrum at all times.
Gentle & Precise: A tiny, low-pressure medical vacuum catheter gently lifts away stubborn wax and debris without touching the sensitive skin of your ear canal.
Safe for Complex Ears: Ideal for patients with perforated eardrums, narrow or curvy ear canals, past mastoid surgery, diabetes, or those who wear hearing aids.
The Advantage of In-Clinic Care at Parkmore Medical Centre
Unlike standalone hearing shops or mobile services, having your ear care performed inside Parkmore Medical Centre gives you seamless, integrated medical support. If your audiologist detects an underlying outer or middle ear infection, eardrum perforation, or medical condition requiring prescription treatment during your examination, our GPs are right here on-site to coordinate your care immediately.
Services Available at Our Keysborough Clinic
1. Microsuction Ear Wax Removal (Ages 5+)
Safe, thorough removal of impacted ear wax and foreign debris for adults and children. Most appointments take approximately 30 minutes and provide instant relief from blockage.
2. Paediatric Hearing Assessments (Ages 4+) – Available early 2027
Early detection of hearing concerns is vital for your child’s speech, language, and school performance. Led by paediatric specialist Vicky, we offer gentle, child-friendly diagnostic hearing tests—including speech discrimination and middle ear function checks.
Note: Medicare rebates are available for diagnostic hearing assessments with a valid GP or specialist referral.
3. Custom-Moulded Ear Plugs & HearSavers
Protect your ears with precision-fitted silicone moulds tailored to the exact shape of your ear canal:
Water Protectors (Swim Plugs): Keep ears dry during swimming and water sports—ideal for preventing swimmer’s ear or protecting grommets.
Music HearSavers: High-fidelity acoustic filters for musicians, DJs, and concert-goers that reduce volume without distorting sound quality.
Sleep Plugs: Ultra-soft, low-profile plugs designed for shift workers, light sleepers, and travellers.
Solid Industrial Plugs: Heavy-duty noise reduction for construction, factory, and trades workers.
Signs You May Need Ear Microsuction
While a small amount of ear wax (cerumen) is healthy and protects your ear canal, excessive build-up can harden and cause impaction. You may benefit from microsuction if you experience:
A feeling of fullness, pressure, or blockage in one or both ears
Sudden or gradual muffled hearing
Ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears (tinnitus)
Earache, persistent itching, or mild dizziness/imbalance
Whistling or feedback from your hearing aids
Water trapping in your ear canal after showering or swimming
Tip: Avoid using cotton buds, bobby pins, or ear candles! These push wax deeper against the eardrum and frequently cause painful abrasions or blockages.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
To ensure your microsuction procedure is as quick, gentle, and effective as possible:
Complete Your Intake Form: Once booked, you will receive a brief digital questionnaire regarding your ear health and symptoms.
Soften the Wax (3–5 Days Prior): We strongly recommend using over-the-counter softening ear drops (such as Biorevive Clean Ears spray available at your local chemist) or 2–3 drops of plain olive oil in the affected ear(s) for 3 to 5 days before your visit. (Do not use drops if you know or suspect you have a perforated eardrum).
Attend Your 30-Minute Consultation: Your audiologist will review your history, inspect your ear canals under magnification, and gently remove the wax via microsuction.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need a GP referral for ear microsuction?
No. You can book a microsuction ear wax removal appointment directly without a doctor’s referral. However, if you are booking a comprehensive diagnostic hearing assessment (for children or adults) and wish to claim a Medicare rebate, a valid GP or specialist referral is required. Our Parkmore Medical Centre GPs can easily arrange this for you.
Does ear microsuction hurt?
No, microsuction should not be painful. You will hear some wind-like or squeaking noises from the tiny suction tube, and you may feel a mild cooling sensation inside the ear canal, but the procedure is very gentle.
Can I claim ear microsuction on Medicare or Private Health?
Routine ear wax removal by an audiologist is not currently covered by Medicare. However, if you have Private Health Insurance with Extras cover (Audiology), you may be eligible for a rebate depending on your fund and level of cover.
For patients with chronic or recurrent ear wax issues, particularly those with complex ear canals requiring ongoing management every 3–6 months, there may be an opportunity for them to access Medicare rebates through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan under audiology, where they meet the relevant eligibility requirements.
This would allow eligible patients to claim a portion of their consultation fee back through Medicare, subject to the applicable referral and claiming requirements.
