3-year-old health check Medicare

Introducing the New Medicare Healthy Kids Check for 3-Year-Olds

Starting 1 November 2026, Parkmore Medical Centre is pleased to offer the new Medicare Healthy Kids Check for three-year-old children.

Introduced as part of the Australian Government’s Thriving Kids initiative, this comprehensive, Medicare-funded health assessment gives parents a dedicated opportunity to review their child’s health, growth, and development with their GP.

Why a 3-Year-Old Health Check?

The first three years of a child’s life are a critical window for physical, social, and emotional development. This one-off check-up is designed to identify any developmental vulnerabilities or neurodevelopmental differences early on. Identifying concerns early ensures that families can access timely advice and connect with appropriate support services, including early interventions offered through the new Thriving Kids program.

What Does the Assessment Cover?

During the appointment, your GP will conduct a holistic assessment of your child’s overall wellbeing. The check typically includes:

  • Physical Health: A basic physical examination, including checks on eyesight, hearing, teeth, and gums. Your doctor will also measure your child’s height and weight against standard growth charts.

  • Everyday Habits: Discussions around your child’s routine, including diet and nutrition, physical activity, screen time, sleep patterns, and toileting habits.

  • Development & Behaviour: Reviewing expected developmental milestones, communication skills, learning, and social and emotional development.

  • Family & Social Life: A conversation about family routines, childcare or kindergarten, and how your child interacts with others.

At the end of the check, your GP will provide tailored advice and offer a written report. If your child requires additional support, your doctor can arrange referrals to allied health professionals, paediatricians, or Thriving Kids support services.

Who is Eligible?

Any child who is eligible for Medicare can receive this health check once between their 3rd birthday and the day before they turn 4.

(Note: The government recognises this check as an acceptable health assessment for the Healthy Start for School requirements for Family Tax Benefit Part A. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children can still receive their specific health checks as well.)

How to Prepare

To get the most out of your visit, please bring:

  • Your child’s Medicare card

  • Your child’s personal health record (the “Green/Blue book”)

  • Details of any medications, allergies, or reports from other health professionals

  • Glasses or hearing aids, if your child uses them

  • A written list of any questions or concerns you have about your child’s development, behaviour, or routines. Parental concern is a key part of this assessment, so no question is too small!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 3-year-old health check free? This assessment is a Medicare-funded service. Please speak to our reception team regarding our billing policies for this specific appointment and whether out-of-pocket costs apply.

Is this the same as the Thriving Kids initiative? Yes. The Australian Government introduced the new Medicare Healthy Kids Check for 3-year-olds on 1 November 2026 as a key part of the Thriving Kids initiative, which focuses on early intervention and child development.

How long does the appointment take? Because this is a comprehensive assessment covering physical health, development, and behaviour, the appointment will be longer than a standard GP consultation. Please allow adequate time and let reception know you are booking a Healthy Kids Check.

Do I have to do this check? While not mandatory, it is highly recommended by paediatric experts. It is also recognised as an acceptable assessment for the Healthy Start for School requirement for families receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A.
